Cardigans and Gemstone Jewelry

Posted by Stone Jewelry Box | Filed under Jewelry Fashion | Feb 13, 2012 | No Comments

Snowflake Obsidian and Pearl NecklaceCardigans are an easy way to add more color and style to your wardrobe. Not only are they the perfect compliment to an outfit, but they also are functional in keeping us warm. With so many styles and colors now available, cardigans are a perfect way to not only enhance your wardrobe but also the gemstone jewelry with the clothes you wear.

Some of my favorite combinations with cardigans include the following:

1.   A perfect fall and winter look would be a black scoop neck cardigan and a lavender camisole underneath with black and white wide-leg tweed trousers and and leather boots goes perfectly with a bold chunky amethyst necklace and earrings. This style is perfect for a cool day at work while being stylish at the same time.

2.   Another one of my favorite styles is skinny jeans, cognac leather riding boots and a long deep v-neck grey cardigan with a white scoop neck tee underneath. A long turquoise and freshwater pearl necklace and earrings and turquoise bangles completes this perfect outfit to hang out with the girls on the weekend.

3.   Perfect for date night would be a black pencil skirt with a black lace v-neck tank top underneath a red silk and cashmere cardigan with a pair of classic leather pointed-toe pumps. The perfect necklace and earrings for this ensemble is a snowflake obsidian and pearl necklace and earrings.

Cardigans not only provide us as a necessity but can also be the perfect accessory for jewelry and clothing wardrobe. Tell us how would you coordinate cardigans with your jewelry and clothing wardrobe. We love to hear the feedback.

Your Inner Rockhound: Finding Fluorite

Posted by Stone Jewelry Box | Filed under Your Inner Rockhound | Jun 26, 2011 | 1 Comment

When it comes to collecting rocks, many people often think back to their childhood days and probably remember emptying their pockets of the hundreds of “treasures” that were picked up around the yard or playground. While the same phrase, “rock collecting” may not have the same appeal as it did back then, it is something that has become a entertaining hobby for some and a way for others to make a little bit of money.

One “rock” that many people have shown an interest in for the past couple of years is a mineral known as fluorite. While there are not many places that allow the public to mine their own, one place that encourages you to come out and have fun collecting is in Southwest Kentucky. The Ben E. Clement Mineral Museum in Marion, Kentucky has allowed both hardcore rock collectors (aka rockhounds) and those individuals looking for “something new to try” to un-earth treasures at their Eureka Mine(s) for years.

Collecting Fluorite in Marion Kentucky 2
Each year, anyone looking to collect has multiple opportunities and those wanting to give it a try still have five more chances to find some good looking minerals. If you are looking to give it a try, please make sure you check out the Ben E. Clement website for all the details, prepare for the dig of a lifetime. As always, good luck and have fun; also don’t forget to yell “Eureka” once you have found the treasure you were looking to find.

Remaining dates of the digs for 2011 include the following:

-   July 2
-   July 30
-   August 27
-   September 24
-   October 29

If you have visited before, or are thinking about giving it a try we would love to hear from you and hope that you leave a comment. Also if you are planning a visit, you can see a detailed report from one rockhound who tried his luck and found a couple of great specimens on the June 4 – 5, 2011 dig by Clicking Here.

The Many Shades of Gemstone Jewelry: Aragonite

Posted by Stone Jewelry Box | Filed under Know Your Stone | Mar 5, 2011 | No Comments

When it comes to your favorite gemstone for jewelry what is yours? In many cases the answer to this will probably be something easily recognized by any jewelry lover. However, there are a few that can easily rise to the top of your list once you learn a little bit more about them. Many of these are stones that are used as accent pieces, and give your favorite jewelry set the “Pop” you look for. One of those pieces is called aragonite, and while you may not know much about it, it comes in various colors and may already be part of jewelry collection.

So what is aragonite exactly? In short it is a common mineral with the same chemical makeup as calcite, which is found in many parts of the world. Do to this common occurrence; it is classified as a semi-precious gemstone like many well known stones such as aquamarine, garnet, topaz and opal. As far as how it is created, majority of aragonite comes from two sources. One source includes hot springs and caves where crystals can form over time, and the other is from many creatures that live in the sea as they secrete it naturally to make shells.

When used in jewelry such as gemstone necklaces, earrings, and bracelets the common shape is round; but other shapes are occasionally found. As far as the various colors used, one must note that they are dyed unless the color is a white-yellowish or golden color. Even so, they go great with a countless number of stones (both precious and semi-precious). One great aragonite combination that can garner the attention of anyone is using it with turquoise and silver.

Now that you know a little bit more about aragonite, those of us at stonejewelrybox.com hope that the next time you come across a piece of jewelry using it as accents you won’t think twice about adding it to your collection. While it may be a common occurrence around the world, it will always look unique on you.

Opting for Handmade Designer Stone Jewelry

Posted by Stone Jewelry Box | Filed under Shopping for Jewelry | Dec 29, 2010 | No Comments

If you are like a countless number of other people, you probably have many different pieces of jewelry that may have been purchased by yourself or received as a gift from others. While many of these pieces are probably designed and mass produced, a few (and you probably know which ones) were probably handmade. With this article, I hope to show you the uniqueness of handmade jewelry and why you should strive to make these pieces a growing part of your collection.

As you may already know there are many types of jewelry available today, and while all are beautiful, let’s focus on stone jewelry. Over the years, stone jewelry has become quite popular with many groups of people and the interest is growing by leaps and bounds every year. In fact, more pieces are showing up in both large and small retail stores than ever before. Because pieces in these stores are very similar in appearance, thousands of consumers seem to opting for something different. That something is jewelry pieces that are as unique as them, and compliments many clothes in their wardrobe.

That search for something new is leading them to pieces that are handmade, and are designed with stones that you rarely see in stores. In many cases these pieces are generally one-of-a-kind that are rarely duplicated by the original designer. What makes it even better is that when stones are involved; although pieces may be cut the same it will always have a unique pattern (which are more noticeable on larger pieces). Because of this, those that wear it are allowed to express their creativity with a piece that best reflects their lifestyle and/or personality.

So what makes handmade stone jewelry even more unique? In many cases each piece is made with a higher level of care, as for the most part there are little to no automated machines used. Instead the pieces are handcrafted with the use of various jewelry making tools, as well as a lot of imagination to design pieces that capture the eye of anyone that may pass by the wearer. Another thing that makes handmade stone jewelry unique is that in most cases the stones and other materials used are of the same quality or higher that those pieces found in stores. Not only that the jewelry if constructed correctly last longer than those that are massed produced or made with artificially produced items. In the end it is simply the case of quality over quantity in order to give their buyers pieces that will last a lifetime.

With this information on stone jewelry, we hope that the next time you look to make a purchase for a stone necklace, earrings or a bracelet you opt to get something that was homemade. Not only will you know a little bit more about what you may be purchasing, you can rest assure that the piece that you have gotten was more than likely made to last longer than that of something that is store bought. In addition to that you can know that you are getting something that is unique as you are.

Is Gemstone Jewelry the New Costume Jewelry?

Posted by Stone Jewelry Box | Filed under Jewelry Fashion | Sep 18, 2010 | No Comments

When it comes to costume jewelry does gemstone jewelry ever cross your mind? While the answer to this question may be simple for some; for others that purchase jewelry to compliment their many outfits, it can be seen as complex. The truth is jewelry itself has evolved and so has the way people think about it, thus in some cases the term “costume jewelry” can now be interchanged with both elegant or chunky gemstone jewelry.

As many people may already know, costume jewelry is jewelry created to complement a particular article of clothing or an entire outfit. When it came into the world of fashion in the 1930s it was primarily created as cheap jewelry only to be worn for a short period of the time. Its components consisted of cheap materials including base metals, glass, plastic and faux gemstones to replace necklaces, earrings and bracelets made of higher quality materials such as precious gemstones, semi-precious gemstones and precious metals.

Today the meaning of costume jewelry has been more defined as jewelry that consist of high quality materials such as semi-precious gemstones, plated metals, vermeil (gold plated over sterling silver), sterling silver or gold-filled metals. As a result, semi-precious gemstone jewelry has given costume jewelry a new meaning. Now in the world of fashion, costume jewelry is made more with semi-precious gemstones and more widely available for consumers in a variety of stores from department stores to high end jewelry stores.

There are a lot of gemstone jewelry manufactured as costume jewelry; however, those pieces in costume jewelry that stand out are original, handmade gemstone jewelry. Although handmade gemstone jewelry costs more, each design is an original work of art by the designer. Also in most cases, designers may rarely duplicate the same design to maintain the originality of necklaces, bracelets and earrings. Each individual piece has its own distinct character to enhance your style.

Would you define gemstone jewelry as the new costume jewelry? We would love to hear your opinion.
